Character Name: Seto Kaiba
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Species: Human
Sexuality: Hasn't thought much about it, but leans toward asexual.
Appearance: Seto Kaiba cuts an imposing image, standing at a height of 6' 1'' and carrying himself with an air of extreme confidence. He is of lean but muscular physique, with an angular face and hard, blue eyes, often alight with a manic glint from the lure of victory. Very rarely does his expression waver from a condescending smirk or annoyance–only the sincerest of smiles are reserved for his younger brother. His brown hair is worn a bit long, often appearing to get in his eyes in the front and extending down his neck to his shoulders in the back. While he generally wears suits (white, with a blue tie) in the boardroom, his standard dress consists of a long, white sleeveless trench coat that flares dramatically (ha) at the waist, worn over a black turtleneck accentuated by blue belts and silver gauntlets. Black pants, a belt with the Kaiba Corp. emblem, and a card locket containing a photo of Mokuba completes his striking appearance, no doubt tailored to be as impressive as possible.
Personality: Kaiba is not one to mince words. He is exceedingly arrogant; dismissive to those that he respects, and downright insulting to those that he finds undeserving of his time. Though known for his callous "the-end-justifies-the-means" approach to cards, relationships, life, and everything in between, he is not without a noble streak. Often, he will grudgingly find himself helping others (if necessary), and at the very least, aligning himself with the side of lesser evil. A skeptic, he has a tendency to discount any sort of magic or supernatural occurrence, even when faced with it, preferring to rely on logic and rationality. While generally quiet and terse, he does have a penchant for casual cruelty in his speech, and is by no means popular. He seems to prefer this, relying solely on his younger brother Mokuba for affection and grounding. He likes and is more reservedly kind towards children, in whom he sees the pasts of Mokuba and himself reflected.
Abilities: (For superhuman powers/strength/abilities, describe how they will be limited) Kaiba , as an extremely young and capable billionaire CEO, is often touted as a genius in both business and the battlefield. Until his sudden dethroning as Duel Monsters champion by Yami no Yuugi, he was widely regarded as a superb strategist and an undefeatable opponent. This brilliance extends itself to whatever catches his attention—the holographic systems and technology that Kaiba Corporation manufactures are all creations borne from his fascination with Duel Monsters. Kaiba, finding himself moored on the now desolate Manhattan Island, struggles with his loss of influence and inability to access the copious amounts of wealth once freely available to him. He also appears to have decent aim, as he has thrown cards with great accuracy.
Weaknesses: His extreme pride and thirst for power often leads Kaiba to make rash decisions that he might otherwise avoid. Stubbornly refusing to accept help and acting for the sake of revenge has often led to dangerous situations, not only for himself, but for Mokuba and those around them as well. Kaiba once forced Yami no Yuugi's hand by threatening to end his own life if his rival did not forfeit a duel and allow Kaiba to advance in Duelist Kingdom. These, and other maneuvers, are resultant of his desire to be unparalleled in every aspect of his life. His condescending personality and his tendency to be verbally abusive drive people away from him and thus, he has few, if any, truly close friends.
Manhattanite or outsider? Manhattanite, on an extended business trip (has been in the city for about a month).
History: (Primarily manga canon) Seto and his younger brother Mokuba were sent to away to an orphanage at a young age when their relatives used up the inheritance left by their parents. They kept each other company in this time of loneliness, and it was from these formative experiences that a strong bond of trust developed between the two siblings. Seto learned to play chess with his peers, and when famed CEO of Kaiba Corporation, Kaiba Gouzaburou, a chess master himself, was slated to make a publicity appearance at the orphanage, the child took the opportunity to study Gouzaburou's winning moves. Upon the CEO's arrival, Seto challenged him to a game—but with a catch. Should the boy win, Gouzaburou would have to adopt both him and Mokuba. He won, but by cheating. This was not the easy way out that he had envisioned; instead, Seto had plunged himself and his brother into a veritable hell. Gouzaburou drove Seto to excel, at expense to the boy's childhood, with many hours of study and strict, oftentimes cruel, punishment.
This intense molding yielded an adolescent who eschewed all forms of weakness, especially those perpetrated by emotion. He overthrew Gouzaburou, taking Kaiba Corporation for himself, and in that instant, Gouzaburou decided to teach Kaiba a final and unsettling lesson: Losers did not deserve to live. He punctuated this by committing suicide, throwing himself through a window in front of Kaiba, and thus putting the finishing touches on the successor of his empire.
Kaiba became wholly consumed by his desire to attain even greater power for himself, even putting aside his bond with his brother to reach his goals. By chance, he wandered into the Kame Game Shop where Mutou Yuugi and Jounouchi Katsuya were admiring the rare Duel Monsters cards that Yuugi's grandfather, Sugoroku, stocked—in particular the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Taken with the strength of the card, he offered to compensate the man generously, even going so far as to offer an entire briefcase's worth of expensive cards, however, this entreaty did nothing to separate the old man from a card that held much more sentimental value than Kaiba could comprehend. The following day, he used a counterfeit card as a bait-and-switch, unfortunately for him, to no success. He was handed his first defeat by who he presumed to be Yuugi, but is in actuality Yami no Yuugi. As a penalty game, he was sentenced experience death for one night.
Roundly humiliated, pride shattered, and his goal withheld, revenge was the only solution that would slake his anger. He gathered the three other copies of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, using whatever means he could employ with a mechanical ruthlessness, and poured money into building a theme park and a holographic chamber to mimic the realism that Yami no Yuugi's shadow game gave to the card monsters. Immediately, afterwards, Yuugi and Jounouchi were invited to the newly complete Kaiba Land, under the impression that Kaiba was apologizing and making amends. Instead, they were led to the holographic chamber, where Yuugi's grandfather was being held and coerced into a Duel Monsters game. Seeing that the lives of his grandson and his grandson's friend were being threatened, he finally relented to Kaiba's pressure. Kaiba crushed him mercilessly. The immense shock from seeing the monsters and the torture from the ensuing 'penalty game' that Sugoroku endured was too much—he collapsed from a heart attack—but not before Yuugi had already agreed to the terms that were set before him. Kaiba agreed to turn off the chamber, but Yuugi had to attempt to make it through the rest of the park's traps.
Kaiba waited for Yuugi at the end of his creation for a final match of Duel Monsters, one that would reinstate him as champion and allow him to salvage his pride. As the match drew on, it became clear that the levels of their decks were completely uneven, and Kaiba was a shoe-in for victory. Until Yami no Yuugi did the seemingly impossible and drew the five pieces of Exodia. Justice was summarily dealt, a Mind Crush swiftly deployed, and Kaiba found himself, or rather, lost himself, in a shadowy realm where he was to reassemble the pieces of his heart, while his corporeal form slipped into a coma.
This left an opening for Pegasus J. Crawford, creator of Duel Monsters to seize Kaiba Corp. for himself. He had Mokuba captured, and hosted a tournament, Duelist Kingdom, on a private island to further his goals. Kaiba woke from his coma as Duelist Kingdom was underway, and upon discovering what had happened to his brother and his company, he set off to confront Pegasus. He managed to reach Pegasus, but was defeated and his soul captured, due to the power of the Millenium Eye. Later, both he and Mokuba were freed when Yami no Yuugi beat their captor.
Soon after Duelist Kingdom, Ishizu Ishtar, an Egyptologist, arranged to meet with Kaiba at the Domino City Museum, where she claimed she had something of great significance to show him. He agreed to the engagement, however he treated her and the stone tablet that sealed the Pharaoh's memories she presented with great disdain. The tablet was supposedly representative of a past battle between a pharaoh and his high priest, who, Ishizu supplied, were Yami no Yuugi and Kaiba's past selves, respectively. This information was met with complete disbelief, but Kaiba accepted the God card (from a set of three cards that were incredibly powerful, and the key to unlocking Yami no Yuugi's memories), Obelisk, that she offered him; and under the premise of saving her brother, Kaiba vowed to retreive the other two God cards that Malik had stolen. Battle City was held, transforming the entire city into a dueling arena, with the finals taking place on a blimp. Eventually, Kaiba lost Obelisk to Yami no Yuugi, and by Malik's forfeit, he (Yuugi) also received the rest of the cards.
No sooner had he congratulated Yuugi on his triumph than Kaiba turned his full devotion back to his corporation, realizing that he had allowed his company to languish while indulging primarily in activities that did not engender fiscal growth. So saying, he decided to court some viable partnerships with American companies that expressed interest in the technology that Kaiba Corporation had to offer—straight away booking a flight to New York and a hotel in Manhattan.
